Abstract
Two major economic crises in Korea worsened both job security and quality in the labor market. Thus it has become increasingly important to understand the impact of types of employment and the individual¡¯s job experiences on the self-rated health, rather than simply considering whether he or she is hired. This is a causality study between types of employment and self-rated health (i.e. differences in self-rated health depending on the type of employment), using the nine job satisfaction levels surveyed by the Korean Labor Panel as a parameter. We found that for short-term employment, the self-rated health of daily-employed workers are worse than that of permanent workers, while for long-term employment, the discrepancy is significant only for men. As a mediated effect, several job satisfaction levels reduce discrepancies in self-rated health caused by differences in types of employment; job security, job description, and opportunities for self-development show particularly strong mediated effect in descending order, regardless of gender or employment patterns. By analyzing how differences in types of employment impact self-rated health through various parameters discussed above, this study suggests that policies should be carefully calibrated depending on the employment types, notwithstanding the fact that the short-term workers are often classified together as ¡°contract workers.¡± This study also examines the gap in self-rated health between permanent and contract workers, and identifies the possibility of reducing such gap through improving job satisfaction.
